Old Town Niwot

The little town of Niwot (the Arapahoe Indian word for left hand) is located on the Diagonal Highway midway between Boulder and Longmont in unincorporated Boulder County. It was plattedin 1875. The name honored Chief Niwot, of the friendly Arapaho Indian Tribe. Their encampment was on Left Hand Creek about three miles west of Niwot. Haystack Mountain was a favorite lookoutpoint for buffalo that roamed the area. Stone tepee groundings can still be found.  Locals and transplants alike are proud and intrigued with the history of Niwot. But, “chiefly” (punintended), Niwotians are pleased with the quality of life this area affords its residents. Niwot, with its historical charm and country elegance, has blossomed into one of Boulder County’s premier residential addresses. Today the community of Niwot is best known for its charming atmosphere where local businesses are thriving. Limited commercial development has kept Niwot a quiet place with a small town atmosphere for people eager to escape hectic city life.

Hightly rated Niwot Elementary School and Niwot High School are located in town as well as Waldorf School and Rocky Mountain Christian School which are both private schools.

  5. Outdoor Activities: With its proximity to the mountains and nearby Boulder, there's no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy, including hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and more.

The Rock 'n Rails summer concert series, Dancing Under the Stars, Niwot Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween, Fourth of July, and Holiday Events and parades are popular events.

Cottonwood Square Shopping Center

Cottonwood Square is located just a few blocks from Alfalfa Court.  It is a wonderful little shopping center with a grocery store, The Niwot Market,  a bank, gas station with small shop, many wonderful gift and dress shops, restaurants, a coffee house, a flower shop, a barber shop, a spa, and a pet spa.

Parks in Niwot

The Niwot Children's Park is located on First Street in Old Town.  It is a truly unique park and folks come from all around to bring their children to play there.  The park's plan includes natural landscaping, several play and climbing structures, and a large wooly mammoth. Financed by a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado with the assistance of Boulder County  and at the same time, the community raised over $20,000 from Niwot residents to contribute towards the purchase of the property and the building of the park.  It opened in 2016.

The money to maintain our park comes solely from donations from our generous community members who help us offset the $12,000 annual costs of cleaning, supplies, watering, mowing and general annual upkeep.

The Pavilion area, the Pergola area and The Story Book Tree area are available to reserve for a limit of 2 hours between the hours of 9am and 6:30pm. However, the remainder of the park will remain open to the public. A tax deductible minimum donation of $25 is suggested to reserve these spaces due to the cost of maintaining our beautiful park.

Left Hand Grange Park  is the original Niwot park.  Located on Niwot Road and 83rd Street it has always had a baseball field but recently a playground, restrooms and picnic area have been added. It is a more traditional community park. It is located just 3 blocks from Alfalfa Court.
